Across three continents and for the benefit of millions of young people, the European Institute for Cooperation and Development (IECD) develops programs that improve living conditions. Since 2014, this mission has continued with the support of Fondation Nexans.

Without training, electrification cannot progress. Providing access to reliable and affordable energy for as many people as possible requires skills and expertise. And to acquire this knowledge, electricity itself is a key tool. From a vicious circle to a virtuous one, the difference lies in quality training.

With this understanding, education and vocational training are at the heart of IECD’s work, driven by the belief that they are the keys to human and economic development. The organization’s mission is to promote progress by strengthening the capacities of individuals and local partners.

IECD & Fondation Nexans: a meaningful partnership

In 2014, IECD and Fondation Nexans launched their first joint project in partnership with Moroccan association L’Heure Joyeuse. Together, they created a Vocational Training Center (CFA) near Casablanca, inaugurated in February 2015.

This CFA has provided one-year certified training in electricity to around fifty young people without qualifications or diplomas from disadvantaged backgrounds. Designed in partnership with the private sector, this pioneering project bridges the gap between labor market needs and training supply. Beyond financial support, Fondation Nexans facilitated collaboration with Nexans’ Moroccan subsidiary.

Today, IECD and Fondation Nexans are active together in three countries: Côte d’Ivoire, Lebanon, and Morocco.

“Seeds of Hope”: multifaceted project across three countries

In Morocco

Supporting the energy transition, the project boosts the employability of NEET youth (Neither in Employment, Education, or Training) aged 15 to 24. Through hands-on training in solar electrification on real worksites, young people from underprivileged rural and peri-urban areas gain practical skills. Communities also benefit from solar electrification of public buildings and environmental awareness campaigns. These young people, often excluded from the system, find in electrification a pathway to the future.

In Africa, our partnership with IECD has been a powerful catalyst for youth empowerment and professional development. Together, we are equipping young people with the technical and behavioral skills needed to thrive in the job market, while fostering a strong culture of safety and responsibility. Through practical training and employability initiatives, we are helping participants build confidence, discover career opportunities, and prepare for a successful integration into the workforce.” Selma Alami, General Manager PWR Grid &Connect Morocco said.

In Côte d’Ivoire

To strengthen the industrial sector, IECD has created a dual apprenticeship program in industrial maintenance. This model combines training in schools and companies, producing qualified, versatile technicians who are ready to work immediately. As Mohamed Younes, Director of Nexans Côte d’Ivoire, explains:

This collaboration gives real meaning to our commitment—it creates a direct link between training, employment, and sustainable local talent development.”

In Lebanon

In a country facing a severe energy crisis, short courses in renewable energy and energy efficiency help young people gain immediately useful skills while supporting the national shift toward sustainable energy. For example, technical graduates receive specialized training in electricity and electromechanics to work in the merchant navy — turning electricity into a field of excellence and international opportunity.

In all cases, training transforms electrification into a concrete opportunity for jobs and a brighter future.

Bridging Young People and Nexans

One of the strengths of the partnership between IECD and Fondation Nexans is the bridge it creates: young beneficiaries can visit, learn from, or even join Nexans teams in their countries.

According to Joseph Ammar, General Manager, PWR Grid and Connect, Nexans Lebanon:

"In Lebanon, our partnership with IECD has been truly transformative. Recognizing the need for practical education and skills development, we stepped up together to make a meaningful impact. Through initiatives like the Solar Academy and the Electricians Academy, we are helping young people gain practical skills, build confidence, and prepare for rewarding careers, contributing to a safer and more sustainable electrical industry.

Lives Transformed

The impact is best expressed by the young people themselves, such as Maria Akoua, holder of a CAP in Electrical Equipment from Abengourou Vocational High School in Côte d’Ivoire:

“ Thanks to the partnership with Nexans, I took a specialized course on electrical safety. It was an enriching experience, and as one of the top participants, I proudly received a full toolkit. This support helped me grow and believe in my abilities. ”

In conclusion, Marc de Kergariou, IECD Director in Lebanon, sums up the collaboration perfectly:

A warm thank you to Nexans (or Liban Câble) for partnering with IECD. Together—as a private company, an NGO, and public institutions, we are raising professional standards for electricians and engineers; while helping vulnerable young people gain the skills and confidence they need to build a brighter future.”
