Empowering women in Senegal: The success story of the EGALES project
Jul 31, 2024On this Africa's Women's Day, we celebrate the incredible achievements of women across the continent. Today, we'd like to shine a light on the EGALES project, a Fondem-led initiative, supported by Fondation Nexans, that has transformed the lives of women market gardeners in Casamance, Senegal.
A five-year journey towards empowerment
Conceived five years ago, the EGALES project aimed to address the challenges faced by rural women's groups (GPFs) in Casamance. Land ownership, access to water, and a lack of technical knowledge were significant barriers to their agricultural productivity and economic independence.
The project adopted a multi-pronged approach to tackle these issues. It secured land rights for the GPFs, installed solar-powered irrigation systems, and provided training in sustainable market gardening techniques. Importantly, the project also focused on strengthening the women's organizational capacities, fostering their leadership skills, and building a strong cooperative structure.
Overcoming obstacles and building resilience
The EGALES project wasn't without its challenges. Land tenure, a critical factor for sustainable agriculture, was a major hurdle. Traditionally, women in Casamance rarely own land. The project addressed this by working closely with local authorities to secure official land allocation for the participating GPFs. This not only ensured control of their plots but also empowered them for future endeavors.
Another obstacle was the lack of access to reliable water sources. Traditional irrigation methods were laborious and limited productivity. EGALES addressed this by installing solar-powered irrigation systems, significantly reducing the time and effort required for watering. This shift to renewable energy also promoted environmental sustainability, a core value of the project.
Building the women's technical capacity was another key focus. The project provided training in various aspects of market gardening, including soil management, seed selection, organic pest control, and post-harvest handling techniques. This knowledge equipped them to not only increase their yields but also adapt to the challenges of a changing climate.
However, the project's impact went beyond technical expertise. Recognizing the importance of collective action, EGALES fostered leadership skills and a spirit of collaboration among the women. It supported the creation of a strong cooperative structure, enabling them to effectively manage production, marketing, and finances. This newfound unity and organizational strength have positioned them for long-term success.

This newfound unity and organizational strength have positioned them for long-term success.
These achievements laid the groundwork for a more equitable and prosperous future for the women involved. To better understand the impact of these changes, let's turn to the story of Fatou Bintou Sané, a beneficiary of the EGALES project.
"Thanks to the Égales project, I've learned a lot. First of all, I've seen the importance of farming. I feed my family and I also sell at the market, which allows me to have an income. I don't have to wait for my husband to come back and ask him for money. [...] I've participated in several trainings: accounting, how to create an association, garden management, water management, and meter readings. I also really appreciated the training on gender equality.
It made a big difference for me because before I didn't dare to talk about certain things with my husband. I understood that relationships can change through communication. I also understood that there are things that a man has no right to do, like hitting his wife or insulting her.
When I was younger, I wanted to be a nurse. Today, my dream is to open a store to sell the vegetables from the area."

Fatou's story is a powerful example of how EGALES has not only improved livelihoods but also empowered women to take control of their lives. Her journey reflects the project's broader impact on women's empowerment and community development.
A brighter future for women in Casamance
The EGALES project's success story doesn't end with its completion. The project has set in motion a ripple effect of positive change that will continue to empower women in Casamance for years to come.
Here's how the project is ensuring long-term sustainability:
-
Building a Strong Cooperative: The project didn't simply equip women with skills; it empowered them to manage their own destiny. The newly formed cooperative is receiving ongoing support to develop its business acumen. This includes training in areas like financial management, marketing strategies, and navigating the local market. With these skills, the cooperative can effectively manage production, negotiate fair prices, and secure a stable income for its members.
-
Fostering Knowledge Exchange: The upcoming SEMER project, co-funded by the French Development Agency, will build upon the success of EGALES. This new initiative will not only support market gardening in another community but also create opportunities for knowledge exchange between the women of EGALES and their counterparts in SEMER. This peer-to-peer learning will further strengthen their skills and foster a network of empowered women across the region.
-
A Model for Replication: The EGALES project serves as a powerful blueprint for future initiatives. Its multi-faceted approach, addressing land rights, access to technology, capacity building, and cooperative development, has proven effective in empowering rural women. This model can be replicated in other regions facing similar challenges, creating a wave of positive change across Africa.
Africa's Women's Day is a time to celebrate the remarkable achievements of women on the continent. Fondem's EGALES project, partnered with Fondation Nexans, stands as a powerful testament to their resilience, determination, and their potential to be agents of change. By equipping them with the tools and knowledge they need, we can unlock a brighter future for themselves, their families, and their communities.
