Empowering women in Senegal: The success story of the EGALES project

On this Africa's Women's Day, we celebrate the incredible achievements of women across the continent. Today, we'd like to shine a light on the EGALES project, a Fondem-led initiative, supported by Fondation Nexans, that has transformed the lives of women market gardeners in Casamance, Senegal.

A five-year journey towards empowerment

Conceived five years ago, the EGALES project aimed to address the challenges faced by rural women's groups (GPFs) in Casamance. Land ownership, access to water, and a lack of technical knowledge were significant barriers to their agricultural productivity and economic independence.

The project adopted a multi-pronged approach to tackle these issues. It secured land rights for the GPFs, installed solar-powered irrigation systems, and provided training in sustainable market gardening techniques. Importantly, the project also focused on strengthening the women's organizational capacities, fostering their leadership skills, and building a strong cooperative structure.

The EGALES project wasn't without its challenges. Land tenure, a critical factor for sustainable agriculture, was a major hurdle. Traditionally, women in Casamance rarely own land. The project addressed this by working closely with local authorities to secure official land allocation for the participating GPFs. This not only ensured control of their plots but also empowered them for future endeavors.

Another obstacle was the lack of access to reliable water sources. Traditional irrigation methods were laborious and limited productivity. EGALES addressed this by installing solar-powered irrigation systems, significantly reducing the time and effort required for watering.
