Bridging the gap: A mentorship program electrifies young futures in three countries
Aug 7, 2024The Institut Européen de Coopération et de Développement (IECD) and the Nexans Foundation are lighting the path for future electricians in Lebanon, Morocco, and the Ivory Coast. This innovative mentorship program aims to bridge the gap between theoretical education and successful careers in the electrical field. At the heart of this initiative is a commitment to connecting Nexans employees as mentors with students in training, following a request from the Foundation's board to explore mentorship mechanisms. This pilot project could potentially be expanded to other countries and associations.
Nexans mentors: The program's backbone
The voluntary participation of Nexans employees is central to this project. These mentors share their expertise and professional experience to guide students on their journey. Their key roles include:
- Sharing technical knowledge: Mentors transmit their field-based know-how, helping students better understand the realities of the profession.
- Providing personalized mentorship: They support students in their personal and professional development, offering advice and encouragement to achieve their goals.
- Facilitating professional integration: Mentors can connect students with their professional network, opening up new employment opportunities.
Tailored learning, brighter futures
The program goes beyond a one-size-fits-all approach. Recognizing the unique educational backgrounds and industry demands of each country, the curriculum is meticulously designed to cater to specific needs:
Lebanon: Lebanese students enrolled in Electro-technical degree programs (aged 15-18) will embark on a comprehensive journey. They'll delve into the technical intricacies of cabling, gaining hands-on knowledge essential for their future endeavors. Factory visits will bridge the gap between theory and real-world application, while career planning workshops will equip them with the tools to chart their professional paths. Additionally, resume writing skills development will ensure they confidently navigate the job market.
Morocco: Safety first! The Moroccan program prioritizes safety training, ensuring students are well-equipped to handle the demands of electrical environments. Environmental awareness sessions will foster a sense of responsibility towards sustainable practices. Factory visits will provide practical industry exposure, while job search guidance will empower them with the skills and knowledge to confidently land their dream jobs.
Ivory Coast: Aspiring Ivorian electricians enrolled in Professional Studies Diploma Electricity programs are in for a treat. This intensive, two-year program offers a unique opportunity. Following a year-long internship, students will receive dedicated support during job search and career entry, ensuring a smooth transition into the workforce. This extended program fosters a deeper level of learning and practical experience, preparing them for long-term success in the electrical industry.
A more sustainable electrical future
By fostering intergenerational exchange and creating a strong mentorship network, this program contributes to:
- Bridging the gap between theory and practice: Students acquire concrete skills thanks to the experience of their mentors.
- Facilitating professional integration: Mentors open new doors for students and help them find employment.
- Developing key skills for the future: Students acquire skills in safety, environmental responsibility, and sustainable development.
This mentorship program is an innovative initiative that reflects the social responsibility of Nexans and the IECD. It demonstrates the importance of corporate commitment to youth training and building a more sustainable future.
We will continue to follow the progress of these dedicated students and share their stories in future updates, providing a firsthand look at the impact of this valuable initiative.
